i want a cat

Today on my way to work after a meeting I popped into a little Pet Shop and saw the cutest kitten, a ragdoll and himalayan cross (see pic) - I really want a kitten and this one was all by itself and was so so so cute.

I have to way up the pros and cons of having a cat:

Pro's

1. I love cats - well some cats and would really like one again.
2. They are good company. You don't have to pick up their poop like you do with dogs - yucko, I think that would make me vomit.
3. They are independent.
4. We had a cat when I was little but I terrorised it so my Mum had to give it away, I no longer terrorise cats so I can now own one ;)
5. I would be able to comment on Monica and Phoebe's blog. I mean my new cat could comment on the blog ;)

Con's

1. We only live in a unit so not as much room as a house.
2. SP is allergic (just a minor detail ;)
3. I want the cat to be an outside cat and that be might be hard in our unit block.
4. SP isn't as keen as I am. He said when we have a house we can get one.

Can you thing of any other pro's and con's with getting a cat?

You could get a hypoallergenic sphynx cat like Dragonheart (he has commented on our blog).

Did you show SP that video on YouTube about the many uses for a cat?

PS. Nixter, you can still leave a comment on our blog. We don't mind having people friends too. Did you see that we have a friend in Wimbldon called Faz? She is nice. She knew Pablo before we did.

DRIBBLING

One of mine pokes me in the face one hour before the alarm goes off every morning.

The other one eats the covers off books and licks photographs.

I used to live in Wimbledon - how cool. I must comment then Monica...

my cat in England DRIBBLES ALL THE TIME. Hi Mum - love you ;)

What type of cats do you have Kristina?

If you leave cats out at night, they go hunting, and bring back dead things.

They get sick; they get old; you have to get them looked after when you travel.

It's a bit like having a kid, I suppose.

We have had two cats for quite a few years now, and they are pretty easy to look after.

However, they do tend to put fur all over our furniture and clothes, they have ruined carpet by using it to sharpen their claws, one of them at one stage thought our quilt was a great toilet, and we caught another one using a half full carton of beer as a loo. We've had frogs, birds and mice brought home as "presents" and have had to clean up cat vomit on more than one occasion.

If you have a cat in a flat you will definitely have to deal with kitty litter, something that has made my husband retch in the past. It's not pleasant.

But - they are still very loveable and low maintenance compared to other pets like dogs. I think having a pet is good for your health:)

Perhaps you could find a breed of cat that suits living in a flat - eg a siamese would probably go crazy but a more relaxed/less agile breed like a himalayan might be fine.

You could try the RSPCA - they have plenty of cats looking for homes and might be able to recommend one that suits your situation.

Sorry that's a bit of a long comment - I come from a family of cat people!

Thanks for the top tips Dave and Alison. Maybe I should wait until we move to a bigger place, the whole kitty litter thing makes me want to vom just thinking about it...

Maybe I should get a fish, but my track record with fish isn't very good. I killed about 5 in the first 18 months of being here.. hmmm, yeah maybe I just spare the fish world...

A friend of mine kept a guinea pig in a unit quite successfully. You have to clean up after them as well though, and they do squeak a fair bit. But they are cute and small and loveable. Pretty tough too - not like fish!

I had a guinea pig called Maralade and my neighbour had one called Marmaduke. They use to squeak and run through the hedges together - I can make a good guinea pig noise...

We should meet up again soon..

I was thinking that too - I will email you :)

excellent...

you let your guinea pigs lose in the hedge to run around? or did they have little leashes?

I'm afraid you have an imbalance of negatives on your cat list...

Nixter said...

Yeah they used to run fast and escape... No 'leads' or 'leashes'...
